Pete Larsen is the chair of Akerman’s national Tax Practice Group, a team advising clients in global tax compliance and controversy matters, including complex transactions in the middle market. The practice was recognized by Law360 as a “Tax Practice Group of the Year” for its precedent-setting work in the United States.

Pete works closely with financial institutions, finance companies, vehicle and equipment lessors, retailers, and telecommunication, software, and technology companies on all matters facing multistate companies' tax departments, including planning, compliance, audit defense, and litigation in all 50 states. His practice also includes a focus on tax strategies for companies in the emerging technology sectors. These clients, often at the forefront of disruptive technologies – from VOIP to digital products to ridesharing – face complicated tax challenges and risks. Pete's comprehensive knowledge in key sectors allows him to anticipate and identify issues early on, advise on their tax implications, and craft develop and implement practical, forward-looking solutions.

In addition, Pete oversees the development and implementation of a variety of customized technologies that help clients manage their tax compliance and keep pace with changes in tax laws and regulations that impact their businesses.

Representative Experience
-
DirecTV: Represented the largest direct broadcast satellite service provider in a constitutional case, which ruled that a higher tax rate on satellite services than on cable services discriminates against interstate commerce, a violation of the United States Constitution's Commerce Clause. Pete's national team manages and conducts planning and litigation for similar multistate companies with cutting edge technologies.

-
Nissan: Represent one of the world's largest auto manufacturers and its vehicle and equipment leasing arm in state and local tax controversy, compliance, planning, and litigation. Also counsel on compliance matters involving emerging technologies, such as GPS and autonomous vehicle software, which are transforming and challenging the traditional application of tax regimes.

-
Bad Debt Sales Refunds: Represent financial institutions and retailers in legislative and litigation efforts against numerous states to recover taxes collected on sales that are subsequently written off. Counsel and advocate on behalf of numerous clients in drafting and advancing multistate legislation (including recently passed legislation in Illinois) addressing whether a retailer and/or a lender may recover sales taxes when retail sales funded by a lender are subsequently written off, and litigating the issue nationally for the affected sectors.
