April 19, 2011
More than 500 HR professionals and in-house counsel attended the Akerman Senterfitt 16th annual Labor & Employment Law Seminar on Friday, April 15 in Hollywood, Florida.  The day-long event explored many important and timely issues in labor and employment law, including social media in the workplace, compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act and the current status of healthcare legislation.  New to the event this year was an interactive mock trial of a sexual harassment case, focusing on the impact of appropriate procedures and documentation in the workplace.

"This is the fourth straight year of record attendance for Akerman’s L&E Seminar, and audience interest is indicative of the many challenges confronting employers in these changing economic times," said Jim Bramnick, Managing Shareholder of the firm's Miami Office and Chair of Akerman's Labor & Employment practice group. “Employers are eager to learn and implement best practices, particularly in light of the changing regulatory landscape, and we’re pleased to help our clients stay ahead of the curve."

Several senior members of the Akerman Labor & Employment team presented at this year’s Akerman Seminar, including Shareholders Christopher Duke, Susan Eisenberg, Eric Gordon, Peter Salomon, Paul Waters, and Of Counsel Scott Atherton, Arlene Kline and Scott Silverman. Several Akerman attorneys also participated in the mock trial, including Shareholders Michael Chavies, David Spector, Jennifer Williams, Of Counsel Venus Caruso, Deborah Catalano, Scott Silverman and Associate Melissa Zinkil.

Designed as a comprehensive update on essential issues for HR professionals and in-house counsel, the seminar also touched on topics including employee handbooks, non-compete and trade secret law, employee benefit issues for non-specialists, basics of OSHA regulations and wage and hour law.
