In conjunction with the release of The American Lawyer's annual AmLaw 200 list, which ranks the nation's highest-grossing law firms, Akerman was recognized for its record-breaking performance for the second consecutive year. Akerman achieved gross revenues of $285.3 million for 2012, a 10.8 percent increase over 2011. Headcount also grew by 6.6 percent to more than 550 lawyers and government affairs professionals among its 19 offices across the United States.

Akerman chairman and CEO Andrew Smulian was quoted, attributing the firm's growth in 2012 to client demand and successful lateral recruiting, which increased 6.6 percent. "We had a strong recruiting year, and it's continuing. We're headed in the right direction and the future is bright."
