Akerman Senterfitt was ranked as the largest law firm in South Florida by the South Florida Business Journal. The firm grew its headcount by 6.6 percent to more than 550 lawyers and government affairs professionals during fiscal year 2012. Within South Florida's tri-county area, Akerman increased its number of lawyers to 269.

In a story titled, "Akerman's Big Deals Helped it Grow," Andrew Smulian, chairman and CEO of Akerman Senterfitt, explained that the firm's steady growth has been driven by work in the areas of middle-market M&A, within the financial services and real estate industries, and in U.S.-Latin American investment and disputes.

“We’ve had a lot of continued client demand in those areas,” Smulian said. Smulian also said that the firm’s New York office has seen continued growth. Earlier this week, the New York Law Journal reported that headcount within the first three months of 2013 compared to the same period in 2012 increased by 32.9 percent in the office.
