Luis A. Perez, co-chair of Akerman's Latin America & the Caribbean Practice, and Francisco A. Rodriguez, co-authored an article for Global Arbitration Review titled, "The Rise of the Emergency Arbitrator," which examined the increasing role of emergency arbitration in international disputes. The authors analyzed existing U.S. case law on the enforceability of emergency arbitration awards in national courts.

Perez and Rodriguez wrote, "Most arbitral institutions have now adopted procedures for the appointment of emergency arbitrators. The development is, at least in part, a response of the arbitration community to the common belief that arbitration was not suitable for cases in which emergency relief could become necessary. This is, without a doubt, a welcome development. However, along with emergency sirens and red lights, the arrival of the emergency arbitrator has reignited the perennial debate regarding the enforceability of arbitration awards that do not finally adjudicate a dispute."
