Speaking Engagements

Amy Moor Gaylord, Co-Chair of Akerman's Traditional Labor Law Practice, will speak on a webinar panel titled "The NLRB on Campus: Labor Law Developments Affecting Your Faculty, Students, and Staff," at the Winter 2024 Virtual CLE Workshop: Employment Law presented by the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA). This session will explore the uptick in union organizing, from residents at academic medical centers to student athletes on football fields and basketball courts and how the NLRB continues to expand its reach in ways that affect higher education, including:

  • Recent decisions and guidance from the National Labor Relations Board that make it easier for unions to organize on campus and for higher education institutions, whether unionized or not, to fall unwittingly into labor law traps.
  • What has prompted students and faculty to engage in strikes and other protected conduct, wreaking havoc for students and administrators alike, and how schools can prepare themselves.
  • The NLRB’s aggressive agenda to reverse employer-favorable rules, including in employee and student handbooks and policies and what is considered protected concerted activity and speech, including speech related to social justice issues.
