Speaking Engagements

Amy Moor Gaylord, co-chair of Akerman's Traditional Labor Law Practice, will speak on a panel titled "The Union’s Role in Preventing Discrimination and Harassment in the Workplace Before it Becomes Unlawful," at the 17th Annual Labor and Employment Law Conference presented by the American Bar Association (ABA). This Conference is the Section’s signature event of the year, which will offer cutting-edge and in-depth programs covering developments across the full range of labor and employment law topics.

Amy's panel will address the following questions:

  • What steps can unions take to ensure members are treated fairly and with respect by their coworkers and fellow union members, even if the responsibility to provide a safe workplace falls to the employer?
  • Can unions help employers to track and combat improper workplace behaviors?
  • How does a union’s Duty of Fair Representation intersect with members’ needs to feel safe around their coworkers in and out of the workplace, and in the union hall?
  • What obligations might other third parties that enter the workplace have regarding Discrimination and Harassment?
  • Can a union or other third party alert an employer to inappropriate behavior without violating its duty of fair representation?
  • Can an employer and a union work together to provide training and resources to prevent such issues?
