Experience Jon Porter possesses a proven leadership record along with an ability to develop effective community partnerships and relationships. He served more than 25 years as a public servant, including 6 years as a widely-respected moderate Republican member of the US House of Representatives. Serving as a City Council Member and Mayor for Boulder City, Nevada, and later as a State Senator, Jon has distinguished himself as an innovative problem-solver and strategic thinker.
As Councilman and Mayor, Jon led the effort to establish and designate land for the exclusive use of the emerging solar energy industry and assisted with the development of the state's only municipally owned and operated power and water companies. Additionally, he facilitated partnerships with the Lake Mead Recreation Area and Hoover Dam to enhance travel and tourism operations, which have benefited both Boulder City and Southern Nevada. He is also a founding member of the Southern Nevada Water Authority.
In 1993, Jon was elected to the Nevada State Senate to represent the 1st District. As a State Senator, he served as Chairman of the Legislative Affairs & Operations Committee, Vice-Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and was a member of the Government Affairs Committee. Throughout his many years of public service, Jon has been a tireless advocate for helping improve the welfare of Nevada's children. In order to insure that students would have access to new and modern educational facilities, Jon introduced legislation that formulated a new bonding structure to finance the construction of 88 new schools within Clark County. He is also a founding member of Nevada's newest public institution of higher education, the Nevada State College in Henderson, which opened its doors in 2002. Furthermore, in response to the growing demands in Southern Nevada for more quality healthcare professionals, Jon helped create an accelerated nursing program at Nevada State College.
In November 2002, Jon was elected to represent Nevada's newly created 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. During his three terms he was able to serve on a wide range of committees, including the powerful House Ways & Means Committee, the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, the Education and Workforce Committee, and the Government Reform Committee. Knowing the importance to Nevada, he also helped revitalize the House Tourism Caucus.
While in the House, Jon passed housing legislation that has helped keep families in their homes and prevent property values from plummeting. He also worked towards diversifying America's energy supply by supporting expanded domestic energy exploration and investing in renewable energy resources.
Prior to his many years of public service, Jon was a successful small business owner. He joined Farmer's Insurance Group in 1983, and served as District Manager until 2003.
