Data Privacy and Security Chair Thomas J. Kearney, Healthcare partner Elizabeth F. Hodge, and Litigation special counsel Christy S. Hawkins advised companies on the best approaches for following privacy laws in an Akerman webinar titled, “State Privacy Laws and Federal Privacy Regulations: How to Operationalize Compliance.” In the webinar, detailed on Legaltech News and Law.com, Kearney, Hodge, and Hawkins explained how the “patchwork” of American privacy laws and corporate policies complicate compliance. With regulations varying by industry and state, the strictest possible approach is often the best one, especially with costly cybersecurity threats on the rise.

“A lot of times, people will say, ‘There’s endless risk in life. I can only insure against so much, I can only spend so much money… I’ll do the minimum, or do nothing and just not worry about a breach,’” Kearney said. “But it’s getting increasingly difficult to do business if you’re not aware of what’s going on, and have some idea of how to best situate your cybersecurity systems.”
