Akerman filed an amicus brief with Illinois’ First District Appellate Court in support of a transgender teen bringing legal action against a local school district. The firm submitted the brief at the request of the American Civil Liberties Union and on behalf of the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, after a trial court judge permitted the school district to single out the student and treat the teenager differently than other female students solely based on being transgender. Coverage of the case appeared in a Chicago Daily Law Bulletin report titled, “Transgender Locker Room Appeal Gets Amicus Help.”

Julia Lissner, Gregory Kubly and Stacey Callaghan prepared the brief, which was filed in a case that will decide whether the transgender teen will receive equal treatment on school grounds, including full access to locker rooms used by female students among other considerations.
