Press Release

Top 100 U.S. law firm Akerman LLP has expanded its cross-border strengths with National Security and International Trade Partner Matthew Goldstein in Washington, D.C. and international litigation and arbitration partner Andrew Dominguez in Miami.

Goldstein joins the Government Affairs and Public Policy Practice Group as partner. Goldstein previously served on the U.S. Department of State Defense Trade Advisory Group and the Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security Materials Technical Advisory Committee. He also led contractor support in the export controls group within the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate, where he helped formulate the Directorate’s positions in White House and Department of Defense meetings for President Obama’s Export Control Reform Initiative. Dominguez joins the Litigation Practice Group firm from Swiss Re Management (US) Corporation.

Matthew Goldstein

Goldstein focuses his practice on transactions subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), Export Administration Regulations (EAR), and the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) regulations. He consults on exports from the United States, reexports from abroad, arms brokering, foreign direct investment, and other activities regulated by the Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), Department of State Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC), and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS).

Representing domestic and foreign companies in a wide array of industries, Goldstein regularly handles global trade compliance assessments, audits, internal investigations, voluntary disclosures, consent agreement management, commodity jurisdiction and classification reviews, internal company training, and develops customized trade compliance programs that meet or exceed government standards.

"Trade relationships between countries are redefining and trade patterns are evolving. Our objective is to stay on top of these changes and continue supporting clients as they navigate the laws and regulations impacting their trade practices," said LaKeisha Marsh, chair of the Government Affairs and Public Policy Practice Group. "Matt has a well-earned reputation as an advocate for clients in their most sensitive cross-border investments that require addressing U.S. national security issues or compliance with international trade laws and regulations. We are fortunate to grow our national team with Matt's experience and his arrival is a demonstration of our commitment."

Goldstein joins an office of 34 Akerman lawyers with strengths across a range of practices and client sectors including: litigation, real estate and construction, financial services, healthcare, M&A and private equity, intellectual property, data privacy and security, franchise and licensing, bankruptcy and reorganization, as well as legislation and regulatory compliance. The team most recently welcomed healthcare partner Noam Fischman from Polsinelli, where he served as chair of its Mergers & Acquisitions Litigation Working Group, a taskforce dedicated to deal-related litigation; and  Consumer Financial Services, Data and Technology (CFS+) Practice Group partner Lorena Rigby, who previously served nearly 10 years in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) Office of Regulations, most recently as Chief of Staff and Senior Counsel.

Andrew Dominguez

Dominguez’ practice focuses on complex commercial litigation as well as cross-border disputes and international litigation and arbitration, with special emphasis on disputes that involve Latin America or parties located in this region. As a commercial litigator, he has litigated a variety of claims, representing plaintiffs and defendants in federal and state courts throughout the United States. He has also arbitrated a number of commercial matters under the auspices of various arbitral institutions.

Dominguez most recently served as legal counsel and vice president at Swiss Re, a Global 500 institution and one of the world’s leading providers of reinsurance. In that role, on a global basis, he managed all aspects of non-claims litigation and arbitration, government/regulatory investigations, and internal investigations. Among other matters, he also advised on certain high-risk reinsurance claims. In addition, he provided company-wide training regarding privilege, risk trends, and loss avoidance, and he also created new policies concerning dispute resolution issues. Prior to this role, he spent seven years litigating complex commercial cases at Akerman.

"We are thrilled to have Andrew rejoin our team's continuously expanding Litigation practice," said Lawrence Rochefort, chair of Akerman’s Litigation Practice Group. "His vast experience in commercial business and contract disputes, as well as his focus on cross-border controversies, will complement our team's existing bench strengths and client offerings."

Dominguez joins Akerman's second largest office, after New York, with 106 lawyers deeply connected to the South Florida and Latin American business communities. The office, headed by Neisen Kasdin, a former mayor of Miami Beach and leader in the revitalization of South Beach, and Luis Perez, Latin America and the Caribbean Practice Group chair and Akerman's first Hispanic to serve as Miami office co-managing partner, has deep bench strength in a range of practices and client sectors including: U.S. and cross-border litigation and arbitration, land use and real estate, financial services, healthcare, M&A and private equity, intellectual property, labor and employment, immigration, tax, bankruptcy and reorganization, as well as legislation and regulatory compliance.
