Akerman LLP, a top 100 U.S. law firm serving clients across the Americas, today continued its expansion in Texas with litigation partner Matthew “Matt” Schroeder in Dallas. He enhances Akerman’s deep bench strength in insurance litigation. With his arrival, Akerman’s Texas headcount has more than doubled since 2016 to 61 litigation and transactional lawyers in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin.
“Matt has substantial experience representing insurance carriers, with a particular emphasis on environmental coverage issues,” said Lawrence Rochefort, chair of Akerman’s Litigation Practice Group, which Corporate Counsel ranked first among the top 10 law firms dedicated to financial services and insurance clients. “His practice strengthens our ability to serve clients with insurance litigation needs nationwide.”
Schroeder represents major insurance companies in litigation with significant exposure claims that pose extreme risk of loss to the company. He advises insurance companies on related policy coverage issues and disputes, as well as overall environmental regulatory compliance and preventive measures to avoid similar disputes and mitigate future risks. While Schroeder has particular experience in coverage issues related to environmental risk policies, his experience encompasses counseling insurance companies on a wide variety of insurance policies and risks, including commercial general liability to workers compensation, construction defect and reinsurance. Additionally, he has experience in pursuing subrogation recoveries on behalf of his insurance clients, including under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act. In that regard, he seeks redress from other potentially responsible parties that may have caused or contributed to the covered loss. Some of his recent subrogation lawsuits have included claims against the United States for its role in contaminating former munitions sites.
Schroeder follows a wave of lateral partners joining the Dallas office, which has grown in headcount to 30 litigators and transactional lawyers. Recent additions include partners Eduardo “Eddy” Espinosa and Michael Napoli, who joined the Fraud and Recovery Practice Group. The Government Affairs and Public Policy Practice Group also welcomed a team of five international trade lawyers and business professionals in Dallas, led by partners Michelle Schulz and Elsa Manzanares.
