Press Release

National law firm Akerman today announced the continued growth of its Intellectual Property Practice Group with Partner Trevor Coddington.

Coddington focuses his practice on all aspects of intellectual property law, particularly patent litigation and procurement. He has decades of experience acquiring, enforcing and challenging patents, having drafted and obtained hundreds of patents before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and various foreign patent offices.

"Trevor is a highly skilled lawyer who brings important depth to our intellectual property team nationwide," said Brian Bianco, chair of the Intellectual Property Practice Group. "We look forward to making even greater contributions to our clients through his comprehensive knowledge in patent litigation and procurement, particularly in the technology space."

In the late 1990s, while obtaining his Ph.D. in Physics, Coddington started his legal career as a patent examiner at the USPTO. There, he examined patent applications in the art of applied cryptography, which touched upon numerous emerging technologies involved in e-commerce, telecommunications and cybersecurity.

His interest in and experience with cutting-edge technologies continues today. Coddington is recognized as an expert in holograms used by the entertainment industry, having been integral in numerous patent disputes involving the technology that enabled the digital resurrections of Tupac Shakur at Coachella and Michael Jackson at the Billboard Music Awards, among others.

In addition to patents, Coddington is a sought-after advisor in other intellectual property matters involving trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. He has obtained numerous trademark registrations around the world.

In addition to his practice, Coddington is also committed to volunteer work. He counseled (pro bono) teams competing in the annual Biomimicry Global Design Challenge (BGDC) presented by the Biomimicry Institute. The BGDC creates viable solutions inspired by nature that address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
