Akerman Partner Donald David is quoted in Rolling Stone magazine regarding the hotly contested lawsuit between the sister of deceased rap musician Tupac Shakur and Tom Whalley, the producer who signed Shakur to Interscope Records years ago. The lawsuit filed on behalf of Sekyiwa Shakur alleges that Whalley, now the Shakur estate trustee, may be hiding some of Shakur's assets from his sister and the Tupac Shakur Foundation, whom David represents, and that he furthermore may be overcharging the estate for his work. David is, among other things, seeking an independent audit of Whalley's accounting.

“When (Shakur's mother) was alive," David told the reporter, "she got to make the choices. Now the only one getting to make choices is Mr. Whalley. There’s a specific provision in the trust that we cite that says the conflict of interest, which is obvious, is waived so long as the compensation that he receives is basically commercially reasonable….We aren’t even sure what he’s receiving."

The court proceeding in Los Angeles Superior Court has been covered by several other news outlets, including The Root.
