International Practice Chair Pedro Freyre spoke with LexLatin about the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on fuel trade. With the continuation of the invasion of Ukraine, added to the sanctions that the United States and the European Union bloc have imposed on Russia, the fuel trade has become more complicated and strategic. In a Spanish interview, Freyre discussed the U.S. government's approach to the situation as being driven by a geopolitical movement. He explained the war has opened doors for the U.S. to get closer to Latin American allies of Vladimir Putin and create a wedge between them.

“…What is happening comes from a couple of directions: the oil issue, yes, because there is the possibility that Venezuela will produce more oil with the support of North American companies…[from] a geopolitical point of view, it is to try to separate Russia from its allies in Latin America,” said Freyre.
