Press Release

Top 100 U.S. law firm Akerman LLP is pleased to announce that its pro bono team successfully represented RefugeeOne in seeking approvals from the City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development and Chicago Zoning Board of Appeals for construction of a new headquarters in Chicago. RefugeeOne is the largest refugee resettlement agency in Illinois and it serves more than 2,500 refugees each year. RefugeeOne welcomes refugees to Chicago, providing them furnished apartments, English classes, job search support, mental health care, dental services, youth programming and mentors to help them adjust to life in the United States, all free of charge.

The Akerman team representing RefugeeOne was led by Real Estate partner Kathleen Duncan and of counsel Jack George.

The Akerman team was successful in obtaining a Special Use for RefugeeOne so that it could use new property to construct a new headquarters, including a community center, employee offices, a dental clinic, and mental health services. The team handled this matter on a pro bono basis and could not be more proud of their ability to offer their legal services to such a remarkable organization and indirectly to refugees.
