Akerman has been named among The National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance’s (NQAPIA) Legal Honor Roll of Pro Bono Champions, which recognizes law firms for their pro bono legal assistance and diversity and inclusion partnerships supporting the LGBTQ Asian & South Asian community. Akerman was recognized for its role in an amicus brief in Harris v. EEOC urging the U.S. Supreme Court to rule that discrimination against transgender employees is unlawful discrimination “because of sex” under Title VII.

On June 15, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court civil rights case secured federal civil rights law protections for LGBTQ workers. The Court held that employers do not have the right to discriminate against LGBTQ people in the workplace. An Akerman pro bono team partnered with the Center for Constitutional Rights and the Transgender Law Center to file an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in support of the case on behalf of 46 nonprofit and grassroots organizations dedicated to eradicating discrimination against transgender and gender non-conforming people.
