Akerman LLP, a top 100 U.S. law firm serving clients across the Americas, is pleased to announce that it has been selected as an honoree for the 2019 National Philanthropy Award. Akerman's Orlando office will be honored in the Corporate & Foundation Engagement category for its continued support of multiple philanthropic initiatives, including Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Companions for Courage, and Legal Aid Society.
Akerman developed an unprecedented partnership with CASA five years ago, pledging $1 million in support of the organization’s mission to protect abused and neglected children caught in the foster care system. As part of the launch of its partnership, Akerman formed the annual Give Back Campaign, with each firm office hosting fundraising and awareness building activities to support vulnerable youth.
In addition to the ongoing support of CASA, the Community Impact Team in Orlando partnered with Companions for Courage, a program providing support and comfort with therapy dogs to children under the stress of ongoing court proceedings. Lawyers in Orlando also dedicate a substantial amount of pro bono work to Legal Aid Society, as well as local non-profits, assisting hurricane victims in FEMA appeals, and crafting appellate briefs on behalf of guardian ad litems.
Akerman will be honored at the 34th Annual National Philanthropy Day Breakfast on November 6 in Orlando, hosted by the Central Florida chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. National Philanthropy Day has been observed since 1986, when President Ronald Reagan declared November 15 as World Philanthropy Day.
