In The News

ABC Action News in Tampa dedicated a segment on some of the nation's most vulnerable members of the population, foster youth. The segment highlighted Akerman for its historic $1 million pledge to the National Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Association and included an interview with Akerman's Karen Buesing, a recipient of the Tobias Simon Pro Bono Service Award — the state's highest recognition for pro bono service — for her unwavering commitment to homeless youth. Buesing discussed the realities for students who age out of the foster care system, and their struggle to transition into an independent life and pursue higher education without support from the community. As part of Akerman's pledge, the firm has created an Akerman Academic Scholarship fund to minimize the financial burden of higher education and provide these students with increased opportunities to achieve success.

ABC Action News wrote, "'Unless there is a guardian or a guardian ad litem there to be their voice, these kids really have no voice,' said Karen M. Buesing, a board certified labor & employment attorney with Akerman LLP."
