Crain’s Chicago Business released its 2019 Notable Minorities in Accounting, Consulting & Law listing, recognizing Sergio Acosta, the Honorable Ruben Castillo, and LaKeisha Marsh. Of this year’s 56 honorees, the lawyers were selected for their commitment to mentoring young colleagues and students, and for giving back to their communities, with a particular focus on minority members left behind in poverty.

Akerman’s honorees reflect an impressive litigation bench:

“Sergio Acosta is co-chair of Akerman’s white-collar crime and government investigations practice and is a partner in the litigation practice group. Acosta is a former federal prosecutor, having served as assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, including seven years as chief of the General Crimes Section.”

“Judge Ruben Castillo joined Akerman after retiring from the federal bench in September after 25 years of service, including six years as chief judge of U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. As a partner in the litigation practice group, Castillo will focus on corporate investigations, white-collar criminal defense, arbitration and mediation… Castillo was nominated to the bench by President Bill Clinton and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 1994, becoming the first Latino federal judge in Illinois.”

“As chair of Akerman’s higher education and collegiate athletics practice, LaKeisha Marsh represents colleges and universities on governance, policy, collegiate sports and NCAA compliance. She is deputy chair of Akerman’s Women’s Initiative Network, which was relaunched with a focus on recruitment, retention and advancement. Marsh is on the board of nonprofit Girls in the Game and on the leadership council of the Posse Foundation.”
