In The News

In the days following the U.S.’s announcement allowing for only a 30-day suspension of Title III, a key clause of Helms-Burton Act, multiple national media sources have interviewed Pedro Freyre, who serves as chair of Akerman’s International Practice, including AFP, The Economist Intelligence Unit, NBC News, and others.

If allowed to be fully implemented, Title III would open the door for new lawsuits to settle decades-old grievances over the Cuban government’s seizure of private property. “This is going to be a litigation holiday here, a free-for-all,” Freyre said. “Here you have a law that seeks to offer redress for something that happened 60 years ago and in doing so, you’re not only going to be cluttering the courts ... you’re also going against the interests of some of your best friends and allies.”
