In March 2025, James McCann, Litigation Partner in Akerman’s West Palm Beach office received the highest recognition bestowed by the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County. Jim has been a steadfast advocate for those in need, serving as a pro bono attorney with Legal Aid’s Pro Bono Project since 1994, contributing almost 500 pro bono hours to serve the local community. He has provided invaluable legal representation to low-income, elderly, and disabled clients, tackling a wide range of legal issues, including contract disputes, real property matters, and tax cases.
In one of his most recent pro bono cases, Jim came to the aid of an elderly blind couple who had hired a contractor to remediate mold in their home. The contractor left their home in complete disrepair, creating hazardous living conditions for the blind couple. When they refused to pay for the incomplete and dangerously incorrect work, the contractor retaliated by filing a mechanics lien against their home.
Recognizing the injustice, Jim swiftly took action. He met with the clients, drafted a forceful response to the contractor addressing both the lien and the shoddy repairs, and diligently monitored the case for any potential legal filings. Jim stood up to the bullying tactics, and ultimately helped the clients stay in their home. Had it not been for Jim's unwavering commitment and legal expertise, this vulnerable couple could have faced the devastating loss of their home.
Jim’s dedication to protecting those who need it most exemplifies the very best of the legal profession, proving that advocacy, compassion, and justice go hand in hand.
