We are pleased to share that Akerman Trusts and Estates Special Counsel Liz Hughes has been named chair of the Florida Bar Real Property Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section’s Guardianship, Power of Attorney, Advance Directive Committee. Hughes’ three-year term as chair began this month. She has served in several leadership roles on the committee including as vice-chair just prior to this election.
The committee is responsible for the study and preparation of proposed reforms of existing guardianship and mental health statutes. It is also responsible for monitoring legislative and case law developments relating to the care and protection of the person and property of individuals physically or mentally incapable of caring for themselves.
Hughes is based in Akerman’s Miami office where her practice includes advising clients on disputes over incapacity and appointments as guardian. She has handled contested emergency temporary guardianship proceedings for clients and has experience with adversary elderly exploitation injunction matters in Florida. Hughes’ degree in Health Science and Rehabilitative Services provides her with a deep understanding of guardianship administration and restoration proceedings. She is skilled in representing professional and non-professional guardians and has experience representing both petitioners and respondents in Florida Marchman Act proceedings. She has also served as private counsel for alleged incapacitated persons, as well as wards.
