Michael Bowen, State and Local Tax Practice Chair, spoke to Law360 Tax Authority about the tax obligations faced by businesses that switched to a telecommuting workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic, as many states bring an end to the temporary nexus relief. In particular, small and midsized businesses that may be unused to handling varying local tax laws will need to be especially careful in navigating the post-pandemic tax world.

“It only takes one person to implicate sales and use tax nexus, so that is very problematic for a lot of these small to midsize companies who maybe aren’t up to speed on all the multistate tax issues that come into play,” Bowen said.
