Press Release

Akerman LLP is pleased to announce that President Joseph Biden has nominated Joseph Falk, public policy advisor in the firm's Government Affairs and Public Policy group, to the Board of Directors of the U.S. Institute of Peace.

Falk, a nationally known advisor to and speaker for the mortgage industry, has been with Akerman for 19 years, and is active in community and LGBT equality efforts in Miami.

"It is both a great honor and a great responsibility to serve on the Board of Directors of the U.S. Institute of Peace, an important organization that has made great contributions, and will continue to address conflicts around the world," Falk said. "If confirmed by the Senate, I will look forward to contributing to the Institute's efforts around the globe."

Falk's nomination will go before the U.S. Senate for confirmation.

"Joseph makes all of us at Akerman proud of both the work he does here and of his intense and effective work in public affairs," said LaKeisha Marsh, chair of the Government Affairs and Public Policy Practice Group at Akerman. "We know he'll make outstanding contributions to the Institute of Peace."

The White House press release describes Falk's credentials: "Joseph Falk was past President and Legislative Chairman of the National Association of Mortgage Brokers (NAMB). He is the author of the NAMB’s "Model State Statute Initiative for the Licensing and Education of All Originators." This effort led to the introduction and passage of the national S.A.F.E. Licensing Act signed into law in 2008. He has testified before Congress on how to improve the regulatory structure governing the mortgage industry. In 2014, he was appointed by President Obama as a member of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Falk is a board member of the national LGBTQ Victory Fund, and the Board... He is a former board member and past Chairman of SAVE, a Florida based LGBT advocacy organization."

Falk is a long-standing Board Member and fundraiser for the Frost Science Museum, which opened its large new, four-building campus in downtown Miami in 2017, an accomplishment of which he is particularly proud.

Falk is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Franklin and Marshall College and received his MBA from the Harvard Business School.

The United States Institute of Peace is a national, nonpartisan, independent institute, founded by Congress in 1984 and dedicated to the proposition that a world without violent conflict is possible, practical, and essential for U.S. and global security. In conflict zones abroad, the Institute works with local partners to prevent, mitigate, and resolve violent conflict. To reduce future crises and the need for costly interventions, USIP works with governments and civil societies to build local capacities to manage conflict peacefully. The Institute pursues its mission by linking research, policy, training, analysis, and direct action to support those who are working to build a more peaceful, inclusive world.
