Akerman Chairman and CEO Scott Meyers commented to The American Lawyer about the firm’s designation of Juneteenth, as a firm holiday. Juneteenth, on June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, when a Union general declared in 1865 in Galveston, Texas that all slaves in the state were free, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
Meyers told The American Lawyer observing Juneteenth is one step law firms can take to show their commitment. “Culture is what you do, not just what you say,” he said.
