Akerman lawyers were recognized among the Daily Business Review's 2016 Most Effective Lawyers. Partner Richard Milstein was featured in the Pro Bono category. Teams in the bankruptcy and real estate groups are named as finalists including Andrea Hartley, Chair of Akerman's Bankruptcy and Reorganization Practice Group; Neisen Kasdin, Office Managing Partner of Akerman's Miami office; and Partners Spencer Crowley and Theresa McLaughlin.

The publication highlighted Milstein's work as a guardian ad litem, for which he routinely represents South Florida foster youth and kids in custody battles and other family disputes.

Recently, Milstein as guardian ad litem, assisted petitioners' counsel in helping to secure a favorable order for a pro bono transgender Broward County teen in changing the name and the "gender marker" on the teen's birth certificate. This decision sets the precedent for transgender teens in Florida and gives them a voice in how they choose to identify themselves.

The publication writes, "He has created a practice centered on advising the elderly, alternative families, and same-sex couples on all aspects of family law. He has shown a strong commitment to serve the most vulnerable members of the community through pro bono work."
