Akerman is a proud sponsor of the Southern Legal Counsel's (SLC) reception titled, "An Evening of Justice," honoring the life of  William A. Van Nortwick, Jr., a former SLC board member and Akerman's former pro bono leader, who passed away January 12, 2019. In honor of Bill, SLC is launching The Hon. William A. Van Nortwick, Jr. Impact for Justice Fund to ensure SLC has the legal resources, national experts, litigation expenses, and needed technology to continue providing high-quality representation for the most vulnerable citizens. The Fund will be dedicated to using the power of the law to obtain positive social change, reform systems and institutions, strike down unjust laws and policies, and hold government accountable to the people. Bill was as known for his dedication to ensuring access to justice as he was for his brilliance and humility. A member of the SLC Board since 2015, Bill's insights and involvement made it a stronger organization.
