Practices

Professional sports has grown into a worldwide, multibillion dollar industry with distinct legal challenges. This complex and lucrative field is subject to a range of issues—from business and financial transactions, facility construction and management, and contract preparation and negotiation, to trademark and copyright issues, immigration, and litigation and dispute resolution.

Akerman is one of the few law firms in the United States with experience in buying, selling, and financing professional sports franchises across most professional sports leagues. Our lawyers have extensive experience in complex business and financial transactions in the specialized area of club and facility financing, municipal bonds, and facility operating agreements. We regularly serve as developer or municipal government counsel in connection with the development, construction, and renovation of a number of major sports facilities, stadiums and arenas. We also assist clients in managing intellectual property issues, including the selection and registration of trademarks and copyright.

Our client roster includes professional sports teams, athletes, sports leagues, concessionaires, municipal governments, regional sports networks, sponsors, broadcasters, facilities, producers, and networks. We have served as outside general counsel to the Miami Dolphins, Miami Marlins, the Florida Panthers, and their affiliates, along with sports facilities including Hard Rock Stadium and the BB&T Center. We also represent auto racing facilities and tracks, including the International Racing Group's track and facilities. In addition, we have worked closely with the National Football League, Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, the National Basketball Association, and NASCAR, both in the U.S. and around the world.
