While Tribal governments possess the sovereign right to control Tribal lands, they are often confronted by governmental barriers and oversight. Overcoming these challenges is paramount to enhancing economic development and the welfare of Tribal Citizens.
For more than two decades, Akerman has represented federally recognized Indian Tribes from Florida to California. We draw on personal experiences and prior career dealings with the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) to help clients protect their sovereign right to exercise authority over their reservation lands. Our lawyers and policy consultants work with Tribal delegations to educate Members of Congress and their staffs on federal Indian law and other issues of importance to Tribes. Our focus on building and maintaining governmental relationships enables swift and amiable resolutions when regulatory conflicts arise. We also provide a broad spectrum of representation to many Tribes in their business and general commercial transactions, including corporate governance, taxation, labor and employment, real estate, commercial transactions, and litigation.
