Practices

As political law becomes increasingly complex, agreements are now subject to an overwhelming number of statutes, rules, and regulations. From corporations, trade associations, and nonprofit organizations, to candidates and elected officials, to major contributors and vendors, Akerman's Political Law team counsels the full spectrum of participants in the political arena.

Akerman fields one of the few political law practice teams with a national footprint, covering the full range of issues from compliance and issue avoidance through litigation and appeals. Our multidisciplinary team includes experienced advisors from both sides of the aisle, including a former general counsel for a presidential campaign, former general counsel for the Texas Secretary of State, and former member of a State House of Representatives. Backed by seasoned lawyers from across our firm, we deliver a unique combination of legislative, legal, and political expertise.

Our lawyers have a strong track record in matters relating to campaign finance, lobbying laws, enforcement actions, tax issues, pay-to-play and procurement laws, and ethics laws on the federal, state, and local levels. We have helped legislators draft successful bills and been active in important civil justice initiatives. We also work with states and counties to address redistricting issues as changes to the U.S. Census reshape the political landscape.
