Jay Schafer helps clients protect current and future product lines by identifying and mitigating intellectual property risks, securing and protecting intellectual property rights, and resolving intellectual property disputes. Having worked with a diverse group of clients ranging from start-ups to global corporations, Jay understands how to focus his efforts to meet each client's individual needs. 

Jay has extensive experience in intellectual property disputes, representing clients in U.S. District Court litigation, inter partes reviews at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Section 337 investigations at the U.S. International Trade Commission, and international arbitration. Drawing on his engineering and military background, Jay works on intellectual property matters in a wide variety of fields, including medical devices, telecommunications, machine-learning systems, composite materials, semiconductor devices, and microelectromechanical systems. He also counsels clients on intellectual property matters, working with in-house counsel and engineers to assess intellectual property risks and identify new opportunities for securing intellectual property rights. 

In his transactional practice, Jay provides due diligence support for mergers and acquisitions, and he helps clients negotiate licenses and agreements involving intellectual property rights. Jay also works with clients on a variety of data privacy and cybersecurity matters, including compliance with applicable data privacy laws and regulations, development and implementation of data privacy and security policies, and negotiation of data protection agreements. 

Prior to attending law school, Jay served in the United States Navy. During a 40-month tour as a watch officer on the fast-attack submarine USS MIAMI, he directed the ship’s operations, supervised the reactor plant, and managed divisions responsible for maintaining the ship's communication systems, reactor plant fluid and mechanical equipment, and reactor plant chemistry and radiological controls.
