Practices

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the senior population will include nearly 100 million people in 2060. To serve this burgeoning market, Akerman assists developers, operators, owners, and investors in senior living facilities with issues ranging from real estate transactions to regulatory compliance.

Our dedicated Senior Living and Care Sector Team advises clients in both the profit and nonprofit arenas, including skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), assisted living facilities (ALFs), independent living (IL), Alzheimer's and other memory care facilities, as well as continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). Our lawyers and government affairs professionals advise clients on corporate matters such as investment structuring, acquisitions, divestitures, and financing, labor and employment law, fraud and abuse, public policy, and litigation matters. We also have extensive healthcare regulatory experience, advising clients on licensure, reimbursement issues, and the development, implementation, and administration of effective corporate compliance and risk management programs.

Working with owners and developers of senior living facilities, we also collaborate closely with our real estate and land use team on green building practices, environmental due diligence, construction, development, and land use matters, as well as complex real estate transactions, including purchases and sales and complex leasing arrangements.
