Emily Cramer (FIP, CIPP/US, CIPP/EU, CIPM) is an associate in Akerman’s Consumer Financial Services, Data and Technology (CFS+) Practice Group. Emily’s practice is focused on privacy, data security, data governance, and incident response. She advises clients on federal, state, and international data privacy and data security issues, including navigating domestic and global privacy laws, compliance, and risk management.

As former in house counsel for global organizations in insurance and technology, Emily has a diverse background and provides practical advice and legal expertise to her clients. Emily represents clients in navigating data access requests, data sharing, international data transfers, regulatory response, product reviews, artificial intelligence and new technologies, vendor management, and incident response. Emily conducts risk assessments and prepares key documentation, such as incident response plans, privacy policies and notices, and contracts addressing privacy and cybersecurity, for organizations including vendors, insurance companies, employers, healthcare providers, technology companies, marketing companies, consumer insights and research organizations, and financial services institutions.

Emily’s extensive experience enables her to develop and enhance client practices, anticipate and respond to consumer, media, and regulatory inquiries, conduct privacy training, and provide creative solutions in a rapidly developing regulatory environment. Emily addresses issues involving federal and state regulations—including the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the FTC Act, the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act (VCDPA), and the Colorado Privacy Act (CPA). She assists financial services providers with the data protection laws, regulations, and standards governing the financial services industry, such as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), and the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) Cybersecurity Regulation. She also advises global organizations on international privacy laws, including the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), as well as its UK counterpart, the ePrivacy Directive, and emerging privacy laws around the world.

Emily is recognized as a Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals and holds Certified Information Privacy Professional/United States (CIPP/US), Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E), and Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) credentials.
