Press Release

Akerman is pleased to announce that our lawyers successfully represented members of the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) in court this week in a complex power struggle. Based in Maryland, TANA is a nonprofit corporation and the oldest and largest Indo-American organization in North America.

Akerman’s clients had sought to run for leadership positions, including positions on TANA’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee, but TANA leadership canceled the election, in violation of the group's bylaws. Our team obtained an emergency temporary restraining order which enjoined the improper cancelation of an election for TANA leadership positions and overturned the subsequent unlawful appointments to those positions.

The Akerman team was led Litigation Partner Ildefonso Mas and Real Estate Partner Daniel Miktus. They described the victory as hard-won but well worth the fight.

"This is a very important organization not only to its membership but the Indo-American community as a whole, so we are proud that our work resulted in fair elections," Mas said. "This win also highlights Akerman’s ability to litigate complex corporate issues involving violations of bylaws, and to achieve a result that upholds the public interest in compliance with corporate bylaws."

The other attorneys involved in this matter were associates Odette Ponce and Genesis Martinez.
