In The News

Mark Levine, Wendy Rossi, and Stacy Bercun Bohm published an article titled, "Land Use Implications from Hurricane Sandy," in the New York Law Journal. Their article examines government response after the Superstorm, including forward action plans developed by local and federal agencies aimed to repair the region's infrastructure and prevent further damages from future coastal storms. The authors describe the possible implications these governmental efforts could have on land use policies, modifying building and zoning codes that could ultimately change the region's landscape.

"We have learned from Hurricane Sandy that implementing strategies to minimize the impact of future storms is imperative. Consolidated, coordinated programs to ensure continuity of infrastructure services, and the protection of life and property, are needed in a way never contemplated before. Government officials in New York and New Jersey are all beginning to have substantive discussions about how to minimize those impacts. As we move forward, open-mindedness about land use, zoning, building codes and governments' role in these areas will be critical if we are to have a successful strategy for the future."
