Democratic lawmakers have introduced legislation that would mandate breastfeeding break rights previously denied to flight crew members. The Air Pump Act seeks to close a loophole that exempted flight crew members from the Providing Urgent Maternal Protections for Nursing Mothers (PUMP)  Act passed by the U.S. Senate in December of 2022.Akerman Labor and Employment Partner Mishell Parreno Taylor tells Law360 in a recent article that while there isn't a single approach to accommodating nursing mothers that every industry can apply to its workforce, there are models for the airline industry, noting the railway industry's efforts.

"What you see in an office setting is going to be very different from perhaps the workforce in the construction space," Taylor tells Law360. "But I think we can learn from what we are seeing in one setting and see how it can adapt to allow it to be something that's possible in another setting."
