Martin Dix will present on the topic of “The Role of HIPAA in Pharmacy for Patients who Disclose Risk of Harm" at the Spring Clinical Conference, presented by the Florida Pharmacy Association (FPA).

Martin's session will include the following learning objectives:

• Discuss how pharmacists evaluate if a patient is at risk for harming themselves or others.
• Review HIPAA guidelines and the requirement of pharmacy staff to disclose patient information, such as when it is required, and what can and cannot be disclosed.
• Review the process in which pharmacy staff would report that a patient has identified themselves to be a risk to themselves or others.
• Evaluate how to discuss with patients their rights to privacy and what requires disclosure.
• Review legal cases where disclosure of information was required due to risk of harm, and the consequences of improper disclosure or non-disclosure.
