Practices

Government agencies operate under distinct constraints—from procedural mandates, sunshine obligations for meetings, and unique procurement procedures and laws to public document and public records/freedom of information requirements, and limitations on authority. With so many mandates—and so much at stake for vendors and constituents—disputes are certain to arise.

Akerman has handled hundreds of cases challenging or defending local, state, and federal governmental actions across a broad range of issues, including election challenges, procurement disputes, first amendment issues, Section 1983 litigation, leasehold, eminent domain, market regulation, environmental and land use, and water issues. Our work spans numerous sectors, including automotive, hospitality, food and beverage, government, banking, insurance, healthcare, gambling, and pharmaceutical. Our national practice also includes bond work on behalf of governmental agencies, as well as public/private financing arrangements.

With a strong lobbying practice, we advocate on behalf of private clients. Working in tandem with our government affairs professionals, we obtain legislative solutions to our clients’ legal problems while pursuing existing remedies to save time and money.
